I could post a list of the top ten or twenty albums of 2008 like every other blogger in the blah-blah-blahgospehere, but I'm not going to. It seems fairly irrelevant given how music is transmitted less in physical than digital form these days; our exposure to music is hardly chronological. The entire canon of music is available to us at all times, and so we pick, choose, stumble upon, and are referred to rad stuff all the time. The idea of a canon even seems a bit ludicrous in an age of such mass media.
Postmodern musings aside, I've decided to do it a bit differently. Here's a list of the sixteen best albums I heard for the first time in 2008. Yeah, I know that sixteen is a weird number of things to have in a best-of list, but that's how many I could think of. Plus, now they make a cool grid shape.
Some were actually released in 2008, most were not. Some I had actually heard before 2008 but perhaps wasn't ready for, some were instant clicks. Some are classics that I just sort of wrote off for some reason and fell in love with in 2008. They aren't in any particular order, except that The Marble Index by Nico was the best album I heard all year, so I gave it a prominent spot.
So here I go:
